"I was a police officer, but..."
-----
"I did something stupid."
Aileas could hear Milo running a tired hand through his hair. She flinched.
"Yeah, stupid is putting it mildly," Milo sighed. "You put a man in the hospital, Ailee. He could die."
"But he deserved it!" Aileas protested, clenching her free hand into a fist. "The way he was treating those kids was just wrong!"
"I know, I know; I'm not saying you were wrong," Milo replied calmly. Aileas could feel herself tearing up.
"I don't want to go to jail, Milo," she murmured. There was a long silence which made Aileas tense. She wasn't built for jail. She'd die in there.
"I have an idea, but it's highly likely that you'll get a worse sentence if you get caught," Milo finally said. "You're going to have to trust me."
-----
Aileas crouched down as low as she could behind the stack of crates. Milo's idea was crazy, but if she played her cards right she could get away from this place and start a new life. Wrapping the bandages more tightly around her chest and arms, she turned around and checked to make sure she was getting inside the right crate. Milo had pulled some strings and forged some documents, and Aileas was traveling to a different city on a giant ship. Disguised as a museum display mummy, there was no way she would be caught.
The shipyard guards finally moved so that she was out of their sight, and Aileas pulled the lid off of the crate as quietly as she could. She slipped inside and replaced the lid, nervously tightening the bandages again. She was officially labelled as a criminal now; the warrant for her arrest had come in the mail earlier that morning. But come a week from now, that wouldn't matter. Aileas would be free.
