“Where is it? I can’t see it.”
“For the last time, Veik, be quiet.”
Varinia sighed, her breath coming out in a puff of vapor in front of her. The chill bit into her cheeks, staining them a pale red against her black ensemble. If not for the boulder she and her companion were currently hiding behind, she would certainly stick out amongst the white landscape of the Boreal Wood.
“Varinia, I haven’t seen the thing for a good twenty minutes. I think we’ve lost it,” Veik pointed out, stepping out from behind the cover of the rock.
Suddenly, a figure darted across the treeline.
“Get down!” Varinia hissed, grabbing Veik by his hood and dragging him back into hiding.
“Owww,” Veik complained, scowling at Varinia, currently shushing him as she notched an arrow on her longbow.
“I can see him,” Varinia whispered. With focused precision, she drew back the bowstring, one eye closed as she narrowed in on her target.
“Well then what are we waiting for? Let’s go kill the thing already!” Veik replied, taking out his axe.
“If we attack now, we won’t stand a chance. We need to-” Varinia began, but Veik was already long gone. Varinia cursed under her breath, hurrying to catch up to the demon as he charged the beast.
Now having taken notice of its attackers, the Hoarfrost Mauler reared up, lips curled in rage as it let out an earth-shaking roar. Veik let out his own battle cry as his axe connected with the beast’s leg, a pained howl leaving the Mauler as it swung out an arm, tossing Veik into a tree like a ragdoll.
Seeing that Veik was alright - though a bit discombobulated - Varinia focused on the beast before. She took aim, and with the release of the tightwound string, her arrow soared through the air before sinking into the shoulder of the monster. While the Mauler attempted to remove the offending arrow, Varinia unsheathed the knife at her side, darting forward and dealing several slashes to the creature.
Having recovered from his fall, Veik rejoined the fight, hacking left and right at the Mauler. Just as the beast began to weaken, it let out a horrible, piercing cry, Varinia and Veik covering their ears until the beast had ceased its mighty roar. The duo exchanged a confused look before resuming the fight, though soon saw its purpose when two more Hoarfrost Maulers ran to their companion’s aid, slashing at the monsterfighters.
“Now what?!” Veik shouted over the sounds of battle, dealing the final blow to the first monster, though his eyes were trained on the new foes.
“We fight- same as before,” Varinia replied, arrow plunging into one of the Mauler’s piercing blue eyes.
Veik grinned. “Excellent,” he said, dodging a blow from one of the beasts only to hack off its outstretched arm.
The battle continued until nothing but gore and dismembered limbs remained, Varinia flipping over one of the dead beasts with the toe of her boot. “Let’s go, Veik- there is more work to be done,” she said, nodding in the direction of the beast’s cave in the distance.
The duo jogged off in the lair’s direction, ready for the next battle against another monstrous foe.
